I love internet radio and it has helped me grow immeasurable amounts as a musician by being exposed to things other than Clear Channel's monopolized radio waves and soul-less djs. As a musician I also know that it is the recording companies that are pressuring our representatives to pursue this legislation for the most part, as most artists are performance artists and make the largest bulk of their income through live concerts. It makes me very angry to see this deliberate and obvious ploy to virtually criminalize the act of supplying the music that listeners want to hear for free without tuning into --and making profits for-- a monopoly like Clear Channel. To close my letter and to drive my point home I would like to say that if it were not for Free Internet Radio stations, I would not have bought many of the albums I have in the last five years for never having been exposed to the artists or recording/distribution companies that sell their music. In other words, without Free Internet Radio those record companies would actually have lost the sales and profits generated by my purchases.
Modern tango orchestra, from Buenos Aires. As artist we think that the most important thing for music is been played. without boundaries and restrictions. All arround the globe.
I dont get out much for being in the capital city of MI we dont have a strong club life. So internet radio in online clubs helps its almost like being at a real life club but less drama and in the safty of your own home.At to forget all thepeople that have been able to hear my sounds all over the world.
the ability to market myself without internet radio would be severly hard hitting.
Salacious are a female fronted rock band based in the UK. We have been aired on internet radio stations world wide for the last couple of years and have had some great response and success due to this exposure. Lets help keep internet radio alive!
As an artist I know how hard it is to be found out about, but seriously, its about the music. I would rather people hear good music than to be payed for nothing. No lie.
These businesses are as similiar as cable tv is to satellite tv.
Between radio and internet music channels, an artificially imposed disparity in cost of operation is monopolistic, giving radio an unearned competitive advantage. If I am not mistaken antitrust laws regarding business and industry were put in place to protect them from unfair play. If internet radio is to be treated as such a major player, then does it not serve the same protections?
I imagine these unfortunate developments of late would impact residents of Second Life as well. Radio streams are common there.
On a personal note, I feel that being heard is a privelege. Making people smile or think is a payment in itself.
These stations are the last refuge for new and "undiscovered" artists, the last place they can be played along with mainstream artists and appreciated thusly. It is not the responsibility of the US government to protect the record industry. It is not an mode of public transportation. Legislation would only be unfair to the consumer, the American people. If the industry wants to survive, it must adapt and use the tools that technology and time offer, not reject them and attempt to stop their progress. Encouraging this will only hurt the industry in the long run. Do industry, the people and the very Government itself a favor and support Net Neutrality. We cannot afford nor handle the creation of yet another black market.
Basically, I'm a Last.fm user. Thanks to this I've discovered many new groups that no way I would know about them with the common ways of discovering music (listening to commercial radios or going to any shop and browse cds, hoping that my intuition would guide me well) I think that internet free broadcasts are critical, not only for the people; music taste developement, but also for the promotion of music itself. More people will go to the concets, buy shirts, cds, Dvds and stuff from the artists. So please, don't kill the music for the sake of few greedy artists and producers.
Rising from the remains of various other underground bands, stretching from many styles, including (but not limited to) Punk, Glam, Thrash, Metal, Indie, and even a bit of Country, comes "The Searching".
After leaving Hollywood upon the demise of Heart Throb Mob, Mark (Vocals/Guitar) reunited with long time friend Eric (Bass) and the two soon found themselves playing with other friends in Silent Film Stars, but as with most things this also came to an end. After making more attempts to get their music off the ground in other bands with various friends and acquaintances, they took a small break, mainly because of many failed attempts to lock down a drummer. Many things were changing in their lives and the future was uncertain. Then through the companion of Eric enters Josh (Drums). Having dealt with alot of the same issues with previous bands & also enjoying the same styles of music, he was on the same page. The three of them decided to give it a shot, and from that The Searching was born.
The Searching is a very serious & professionally minded band that plays rock & roll, combining the many styles they love & have played in former bands, and adding their love for horror, they feel they have found the band they were meant to be a part of.
If it had not been for Internet radio, my band would have never received airplay. Internet radio provides an invaluable service to independent artists.
My name is bernadette (Bernadette Bohan), I am a singer, songwriter, front my own original band, visual and conceptual artist, activist, organizer, event producer and very involved in the culture in San Francisco, the national and international scene and feel that it is incredibly important that we maintain traditional radio, internet radio and all of the important avenues of entertaining, informing and educating the populus as a whole. Please reconsider taxing these stations and causing them to go into a state of nonexistence.
Sincerely,
bernadette
This is pure and simple excessive greed. My Blues band plays all around Oregon and Northern California and I can't imagine a need to rob Internet radio in a biased manner that leaves regular radio unimpacted. The listener-ship of the Internet is far bigger and so they see a golden goose to rob. I appreciate the ability to listen to many different bands from the Internet with out commercials that are insidious on the regular airwaves
4 goodness sake (female barbershop)
My group formed as 4 freshmen girls in the CHS choir program. Our director introduced us to the world of barbershop and we fell in love and we have been dedicated eversince! Music is our lives and i am glad to be able to help keep things affordable for fellow musicians, listeners and broadcasters!
Pandora and internet radio serves the public interest, convenience, and neccesity which is why it should continue to be allowed.
I'm an independent producer for Freedom Fever Music in Los Angeles, California. I've always been interested in the way the RIAA and major record labels have been choking independent artists throughout the years. They're audacity constantly amazes me.
I have been working hard at trying to get online (and offline) airplay of my music. With this happening, it will be more difficult to be heard.
i have found internet radio to be an invaluable source for new music reching the ears of new listeners... thereby increasing the number of new fans and directly affecting the number of people who attend shows and purchase records. the silencing of internet radio by raising music royalty rates would not increase the money going into the pockets of artists and labels in the long term... it would merely contribute to their disappearance as well.
sincerely,
brody boyer
Internet radio makes it possible to get my music to the public. It is a grave mistake to increase the fees and only helps conglomerate commercial interests rather than the actual artists or listeners searching for new music. Please allow there to be a different medium other than the music of MTV and what they want us to hear. Freedom of speach, freedom of sound
we are a band that advocates a drug free, alcohol free, tobacco free lifestyle. we encourage kids to think fro themselves and challenge the status quo. all musical expression should made available to the public and the best way to do so is available media. this particular medium is coming under fire and we as a band stand united with independent radio stations that play music that they endorse with there integrity and character, not a puppet of mass media marketing.
